Four Poster Beds
Four poster beds are exactly what you would expect them to be from the name. A four poster bed is any kind of bed that has four bed posts - one at each corner. These are sometimes thought of as a more old fashioned style of bed, and many older wooden four poster beds are on the market having been made by bed craftsmen for hundreds of years. This style of bed was particularly popular in America throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. When people think of four poster beds they often visualize four poster canopy beds, but this is not always the case. Many four poster beds simply have four posts, and the posts that are on either side of the headboard will be taller than the posts that are on either side of the footboard. Four poster beds in the UK may have somewhat different size ratings than the similar four poster beds that you can find in the United States, particularly if you are buying an antique or historical four poster bed. Four poster canopy beds are used to provide shade so that it is easy for people to sleep while there may be other lights in the room (it can also be easy to sleep in if you have a four poster canopy bed).
While four poster beds that are antiques as well as modern brands such as MFI four poster beds can be a little pricey, often costing upwards of several hundred dollars depending on the kind of wood and the quality of any carving and special design that is involved, cheap four poster beds are also available. Affordable four poster beds can be constructed from kits on your own that charge for little more than the cost of the raw materials (the wood, screws and so on). If you have a little bit of furniture construction know-how, making your own do it yourself four poster bed might be a great way to save some money and to be able to put together a large and attractive looking bed without having to pay a lot of money.
